The Difference Between Architectural and 3-Tab Shingles

You have probably noticed that asphalt shingles are the most popular residential roofing material in the United States. They come in many different colors and styles and are usually the most cost-effective option.

But did you know that there are different types of asphalt shingles? If you choose asphalt for your roof replacement, you will have the option of architectural or 3-tab shingles. Consider the pros and cons of each shingle type below before you make a decision.

Material

Both architectural and 3-tab shingles are made of asphalt and adhesives with a fiberglass backing. However, architectural shingles are thicker and heavier with stronger adhesives, making them a sturdier roofing material.

Wind Resistance

Unsurprisingly, architectural shingles being of higher quality materials affords them a higher wind rating. You will usually find architectural shingles rated for winds over 80 mph with 3-tab shingles lower than 60 mph.

Lifespan

Over time, the weather conditions will affect any type of shingle. Architectural shingles, however, hold up better than 3-tab, lasting upwards of 20 years with proper maintenance. Whereas 3-tab shingles rarely hold up more than ten years in rough weather.

Appearance

3-tab shingles are flat, which means they have a uniform tab shape and size. Architectural shingles have a much more dimensional appearance because they have more layers of material. They can even mimic the appearance of cedar shakes or slate.

Cost

As is very clear by this point, architectural shingles are more durable and last longer, so they will usually cost more than 3-tab shingles. However, remember that over your roof’s lifetime, architectural shingles are generally a better investment as they last longer.

Warranty

The warranty will vary by product and brand, but it is usually reflective of the overall lifespan of the shingles you choose. So that means you’ll find most 3-tab shingles with manufacturers warranties closer to 25 years, and architectural shingles over 50 years and sometimes even lifetime.

While it is clear that architectural shingles are usually the better choice, sometimes homeowners choose 3-tab shingles if they are on a tight budget or outfitting a rental property. Most roofers, however, will recommend architectural shingles for the pros outlined above.

No matter what type of asphalt shingle you choose, it must be installed correctly to protect your home. If you’re considering a roof replacement, get matched with a trusted roofer near you.
